FX Conversion & Hidden Markup Calculator
For readers comparing a transfer quote against a reference supplied by the reader. Rates are recipient currency units per sender currency unit.
Examples are hypothetical. CU = currency units. Use one consistent currency wherever CU appears. No live prices or provider data are fetched.
How to read the result
The comparison depends on the reference rate and timestamp you choose; a negative FX cost indicates a quote above that reference. It does not identify undisclosed intermediary charges or provide live rates, an executable quote or a delivery guarantee.
Formula
- Convertible amount C = amount for fee added on top; otherwise amount − fee. Received amount = C × quoted rate.
- Signed FX cost in sender units = C × (reference − quoted)/reference. Rate discount = (1−quoted/reference)×100%.
- Sender total paid = amount + fee for fee on top; otherwise amount. All-in cost = total paid − received/reference = stated fee + signed FX cost.
Worked example
Amount 1,000, fee 5 on top, reference 0.86, quote 0.84: received = 840 recipient CU; paid = 1,005 sender CU; FX cost = 23.26 sender CU; all-in cost = 28.26 sender CU.
