Casino bonus wagering requirements: calculate the real commitment

Calculate play-through, check game weighting and identify the terms that can make a casino bonus difficult to withdraw.

The short answer

A bonus headline is not its cash value. Wagering requirements, eligible games, maximum stake, expiry and withdrawal rules determine the real commitment.

Calculate the qualifying turnover

A wagering requirement states how much qualifying play must occur before restricted bonus funds or associated winnings become withdrawable. First identify whether the multiplier applies to the bonus only or to the deposit plus bonus. The difference can be substantial.

A 20 bonus with a 10× bonus-only requirement produces 200 of required qualifying wagers. A 100 deposit plus 20 bonus with a 10× deposit-and-bonus requirement produces 1,200. This turnover is not a prediction of the final loss or return.

Check game contribution and maximum stake

Not every game necessarily counts in full. If a game has 20% weighting, each 1 wager contributes only 0.20 toward the requirement. Excluded games contribute nothing. Check the exact list rather than assuming every casino game qualifies.

Promotions may also restrict the maximum stake while bonus funds are active. Breaking a promotional play restriction can affect bonus funds or winnings, so read the rule before playing rather than after requesting a withdrawal.

Read every significant condition

Check eligibility, minimum deposit, payment-method exclusions, expiry, eligible games, contribution percentages, maximum stake, maximum convertible winnings and withdrawal conditions. A short expiry can make even a modest requirement unrealistic within a pre-set time and spending limit.

The UK Gambling Commission says promotional terms should be clear, transparent and readily accessible. In Great Britain, rules effective from 19 January 2026 cap wagering requirements on bonus funds at 10 times; rules differ elsewhere, so this is not a universal limit.

Compare the bonus with declining it

A larger headline bonus can carry a larger play-through commitment. Compare the complete terms with the option of depositing without accepting a promotion. Do not increase spending or playing time merely to finish a requirement.

If the terms are unclear, capture the offer and ask the service for an explanation before accepting. If a bonus creates pressure to continue, stop; an unfinished promotion is not a debt.

  • Identify what amount the multiplier applies to.
  • Calculate game weighting separately.
  • Check maximum stake and expiry.
  • Never chase completion beyond a fixed budget or time limit.

Practical checklist

  • Calculate total qualifying turnover before accepting.
  • Check eligible games, weighting and payment methods.
  • Read expiry, stake and withdrawal restrictions.
  • Compare the promotion with declining it entirely.
