Crypto exchange fees: trading, spreads and withdrawals
How to compare the full cost of buying, selling and moving crypto.
CDCrypto Research DeskResearch desk · Updated: · 9 min read→The short answer
A low trading fee can be offset by a wide spread or expensive withdrawal. Compare the complete route from deposit to final wallet.
Price the complete route
The real cost of buying and moving crypto can include a deposit charge, trading fee, spread, conversion fee, withdrawal charge and blockchain network fee. A platform with a low advertised trading fee may still be more expensive if its quoted price contains a wider spread or its withdrawal charge is high.
Start with a fixed cash amount and one asset. Record the quoted asset price, every explicit charge and the amount that reaches the final wallet. Repeat the comparison at roughly the same time because market prices and network conditions move.
Trading fee and spread are not the same
A trading fee is an explicit charge. A spread is the difference between the price available to buy and the price available to sell, or between a quoted retail price and a reference market price. Coinbase, for example, states that fees can depend on factors including payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction and asset, and that a spread may be included in simple trades or conversions.
Use the final order preview rather than a marketing table. If a platform offers both simple purchase and order-book trading, compare the final asset received through both routes, including funding and withdrawal.
Network fees and withdrawals
A network fee pays for blockchain processing and can vary independently of the exchange's trading fee. On Ethereum, gas depends on the computation required and network demand; the protocol's base fee and an optional priority fee are components of the transaction cost.
Confirm the withdrawal network and destination address. The same token can exist on multiple networks, and choosing an incompatible network can cause loss. A platform may also set its own withdrawal charge or minimum rather than passing through the exact on-chain fee.
Cost is only one decision factor
Also compare custody model, withdrawal controls, account security, availability in your country and the process for resolving a restricted account. The cheapest quote is not automatically the most appropriate service. Crypto prices are volatile and transfers may be irreversible.
- Preview the complete order before confirming.
- Compare the final asset received.
- Verify the withdrawal network and minimum.
- Test a new address with a small amount when appropriate.
Practical checklist
- Include spread, trading, withdrawal and network costs.
- Compare identical assets, amounts and timestamps.
- Verify network compatibility before sending.
- Treat custody and account access as part of the decision.
