Why this matters

Preserve precise transaction evidence (reference, timestamps, amounts, app/SMS/USSD copies) and follow the bank‑first complaint path; use NIBSS *565* and the CBN Consumer Protection escalation if the bank does not resolve the issue within its timeframe.

What to keep and why

When an electronic NIP/instant transfer fails, collect the transaction reference (trace ID), exact amount, and the precise date and time shown by your bank or app. These fields are the core identifiers used by banks, NIBSS and regulators to trace and match transfers.

Preserve screenshots or copies of any app screen, SMS confirmation or USSD response that shows the reference or the error status. Also save your sender account statement showing the debit and any communication or ticket numbers issued by the bank.

  • Transaction reference / NIP trace ID
  • Exact amount debited and any repeated attempts
  • Exact date and time (bank/app timestamp)
  • Sender account number and registered mobile number
  • Receiving bank and receiving account number (if known)
  • Screenshots/SMS with status and transaction reference
  • Copy/photo of *565* USSD response showing transaction status
  • Sender account statement showing the debit
  • Bank complaint/ticket numbers and all chat/email exchanges

Industry timing expectations

NIBSS sets the expectation that NIP transaction reversals should be processed instantly or within 24 hours where operationally possible. If a straightforward reversal is not possible, incidents usually enter a dispute flow with an industry SLA that can extend to 72 hours for some handling stages.

CBN consumer‑protection guidance requires consumers to give their bank the opportunity to resolve a complaint within the bank’s stated timeframe (CBN references two weeks in general and up to 30 days for some categories). Only after the bank’s process is exhausted can you escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department.

  • NIBSS: reversal expected instantly or within 24 hours where possible
  • Industry dispute handling can take up to 72 hours in some cases
  • CBN: allow bank complaint period (commonly 2 weeks; some issues 30 days)
  • Escalate to CBN CPD only after the bank fails to resolve within its timeframe

How to check status quickly (use NIBSS *565*)

On the mobile number registered to the sending account, dial *565*5# to query recent NIP transactions. Follow the prompts and save a photo or screenshot of the response — NIBSS responses are admissible evidence when tracing failed transfers.

Typical responses include messages like “No transactions found within the last 48 hours”, or “<date>/<beneficiary name>/No” (not successful), or “<date>/<beneficiary name>/Yes” (processed). Save the full response and attach it to your complaint.

  • Dial *565*5# from the sender’s registered mobile number
  • Follow prompts, enter required fields and capture the response
  • Save a photo/screenshot of the USSD result as evidence
  • Use the USSD result when you lodge the complaint with the bank

How to lodge a focused complaint and escalate

Lodge a formal complaint first with the sending bank (and the receiving bank if you are the beneficiary). Include the worked‑example fields: sender name, account and mobile number, exact timestamp, amount, NIP reference, receiving bank and account, screenshots/SMS/*565* output, and the remedy requested (reversal or trace).

If the bank does not resolve the case within its stated timeframe, escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department (CPD). The CBN pages set out the escalation route; send the bank complaint reference and all supporting documents to the CPD email or postal address provided on CBN’s site.

  • Submit full details and attachments to the sending bank's complaints channel
  • Record the bank complaint/ticket number and times of all contacts
  • Allow the bank’s stated timeframe (check the bank’s own SLA as well as CBN guidance)
  • If unresolved, escalate to CBN CPD with the bank reference and evidence

Practical checklist

  • Preserve the transaction reference (NIP trace ID) and exact timestamp immediately
  • Take screenshots of app messages, SMS and the *565* USSD response and save the sender account statement
  • Do not share PINs or OTPs; redact sensitive credentials in any shared documents
  • Lodge a formal complaint with the sending bank including all evidence and note the ticket number
  • Wait for the bank’s stated response time (commonly 2 weeks; check for bank-specific timelines)
  • If unresolved, escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department with the bank’s ticket and all attachments
